When notable figures associate themselves with a certain issue, it receives more publicity than expected. The fact that Michelle Obama, America's First Lady, is heavily involved in this topic shows the importance of food deserts.
Although we are not on the same level as other countries, like Africa, the United States has its share of struggles with retrieving healthy food. Our country is second in terms of the most obese country in the world (Tay Berman, 2013). Because of all the small stores that don't contain healthy food, which is pricey, it leads people to purchase junk food. As shown in the photo below, a sort of vegetable is $2.69, whereas a bag of chips is only $0.50. A little over a month ago, it was revealed that Indianapolis is the worst nation for food deserts, tied with Oklahoma City. (Jessica Smith, 2014).
