With food deserts comes the constant traveling, residents of poor neighborhoods are accustomed to the multiple trips for something eat. A common topic throughout our Sociology class this year were values, norms, and sanctions. The first, value, are important and lasting beliefs shared by members in a culture about what is good/bad and desirable/undesirable. People who experience the effects of food deserts are familiar with the fact that healthy food is a must, but have to settle for something much cheaper- junk food. Due to this, they know of the possible health problems expected. These values can also be identified as norms because people know it is necessary to perform this action. Norms are the approved ways and behavior within society or a group. Although it sounds odd, people who reside in a food desert are used to the norm of using multiple transportation to obtain food.
